Lavinia Mareri Lavinia Mareri

Lavinia Mareri is an Italian PhD student in ‘Agri-Food Technologies and Biotechnologies’ (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia). The aim of her research project is to gain more insights into the structure and function of Frost resistance-H2 (Fr-H2) locus in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Fr-H2 locus is a major QTL affecting freezing tolerance in barley, yet its molecular basis is still not clearly understood.

During her period at CNRGV, Lavinia will characterize Fr-H2 QTL in Hordeum vulgare L. cv Nure (winter type, frost tolerant) by screening a non-gridded BAC library from this genotype and will establish the physical map of this genomic region. The physical map obtained for Nure will be then compared with the reference genotype Morex (springer type, frost susceptible) in order to find the structural differences which could explain the different degree of frost tolerance observed between the two genotypes.
