CNRGV carbon footprint for 2023

Added on : 11 July 2024

For the second year in a row, CNRGV calculated its carbon footprint. This estimate will help us identify ways to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions while continuing to provide quality services to research teams.

To do this work, our sustainability referent, David Pujol, uses the app «GES 1point5» developed by the Research Group Labos1point5.org

In 2022, our greenhouse gas emissions were 308 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.

In 2023, they amounted to 257 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, a decrease of 16.5%!

These spectacular results were achieved thanks to the combined efforts of the Occitanie Toulouse Centre and all the laboratory staff. The gains were notable in the areas of :

  • Reduced gas and electricity consumption thanks to upgrading the heating network in the frame of Occitanie INRAE Energy Management Plan and the optimization of samples storage in our -80°C freezers,
  • Transport whose impact has been reduced by substituting air travel with train travel as frequently as feasible and by adopting increasingly soft mobility for commuting,
  • Emissions related to lab supplies, an important position mastered through a reasoned purchasing policy.

Our efforts will continue to reduce this carbon footprint and be part of INRAE's low-carbon trajectory.

This quantified carbon footprint will enable us to provide estimates of the greenhouse gas emissions generated by each service we provide on our quotations.

This calculation will be based on the "carbon intensity", which refers to the emissions generated per euro of budget spent by the laboratory for its operations, including but not limited to energy, materials, consumables, travel, IT, and so forth.
